Albaola Faktoria for Ronda Magazine

Recently, I had the privilege of photographing one of the most fascinating projects I’ve worked on: the reconstruction of the San Juan whaling galleon at the Albaola shipyard in Pasajes, Gipuzkoa. This report, commissioned by Ronda de Iberia magazine, allowed me to capture the incredible craftsmanship and dedication behind the creation of an exact replica of a 16th-century ship. The experience was as immersive as it was unique, and every corner of the shipyard reflects a deep commitment to preserving Basque maritime heritage.

Albaola shipyard is a place where time seems to have stopped. Here, a team of artisans, carpenters, and volunteers has spent over a decade meticulously rebuilding the San Juan, a whaling galleon that sank off the coast of Canada in 1565. Under the leadership of Xabier Agote, these professionals use the same techniques and materials that were employed in the 16th century to bring this iconic vessel back to life.

As you walk through the shipyard, the smell of wood and the constant hammering of iron nails transport visitors to another era. The project is not just about building a ship; it’s about reviving and preserving the knowledge and skills of the ancient Basque carpenters and sailors. It’s a living tribute to maritime history and a reminder of the deep connection between the Basque Country and the sea.

Albaola is not just a shipyard; it’s a cultural center that has welcomed over 375,000 visitors, offering them the opportunity to witness the progress of the San Juan’s reconstruction. This galleon will not be a mere museum piece. Once completed, it will set sail for Canada, fulfilling a historic journey that began more than four centuries ago.

It was an incredible experience to document this project. The images I captured showcase the majesty of the San Juan’s bow, with its hull made from the oak forests of Navarra, as well as the workshops where nails and tools are forged following the sketches made by archaeologists who studied the remains of the original ship. Albaola’s story and its team are a testament to resilience, passion, and respect for tradition.
