Zabalgana for El Pais Semanal
Zabalgana is a young and dynamic neighborhood in Vitoria-Gasteiz, celebrated for its vibrant community and spirit of collaboration. Developed during Spain’s housing boom, it initially faced challenges typical of PAU (Urban Action Plan) areas, such as uninviting urban designs and a lack of essential services. However, the active participation of its more than 29,000 residents has led to a remarkable transformation. Community involvement has played a crucial role in shaping Zabalgana into a thriving neighborhood.
The arrival of essential services, including health centers, civic centers, and schools, has significantly enhanced the quality of life in the area. The Zabalgana Civic Center, inaugurated in 2017, provides a wide range of activities and services, further fostering a sense of community among residents.
In addition to improving services, the efforts of neighborhood associations have been instrumental in developing infrastructure and green spaces. Key initiatives, such as the pedestrianization of Labastida Square and the establishment of community gardens, have created inviting environments for residents to gather and connect.
Despite the common pitfalls associated with PAU developments, Zabalgana stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and persistence in urban revitalization. The neighborhood exemplifies how collective action can overcome challenges, resulting in a cohesive, lively community where residents take pride in their achievements.
